Since
December 2000 the DCCH Neighborhood Jobs Initiative (NJI) program
has assisted 1200 community residents transition to the world
of work. NJI operates as a partnership of community based organizations,
public agencies and businesses working together to support local
residents in their efforts to enter the workforce and advance
in a career. The goal of NJI is to maximize the community’s
ability to connect to local and regional job opportunities through
DCCH job placement partners.
NJI
is a national program that began in 1998 as a pilot in five cities
across the US: Chicago, IL; Forth Worth, TX; Hartford, CN; New
York, NY and Washington, DC. The program was developed to address
the issues of unemployment, under-employment and the many barriers
that individuals face when seeking to enter or return to the workforce. |

At the core of the NJI employment program is Jobs Club pre-employment
training. Each month, the Jobs Club offers a two-week training session, meeting
Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm.
The Jobs Club is designed to assist participants in developing skill sets and
strategies that will prepare them to secure and maintain employment. Training
sessions are conducted in the newly designed Computer Lab at DCCH, which enables
acquisition of basic computer and internet literacy.
Seasoned professionals associated with local employers serve as mentors and participate
in the Jobs Club by sharing their knowledge of employment practices and their
expectations of new employees in the workplace. |

The
Tivoli Square and DC-USA development projects will create 1,800
new jobs in Columbia Heights. As a development partner on both
projects, DCCH is committed to capturing employment opportunities
for neighborhood residents.
NJI has coordinated a First-Source Agreement with the DC Department
of Employment Services (DOES) which will provide priority hiring
preferences for Columbia Heights residents who sign up through NJI and DOES.
NJI is working closely with Monarch Construction Company and various
retail businesses involved in hiring for jobs associated with the
Tivoli.
If you are interested and have not already registered through NJI
and DOES, please contact Elaine Chase, Acting NJI Director, at
